What Causes Window Fogging?

The cause of home window fogging depends largely on where the condensation is forming. Moisture on the indoor surface, between the panes, and on the outside of the glass can all have very different causes.


Condensation on the Inside of the Window

One of the most common types of window condensation forms on the indoor side of the glass. This usually happens when warm, humid air inside your home comes into contact with a cold window surface.


Interior window condensation is especially common during long West Michigan winters. As outdoor temperatures drop, the glass can become cold enough for moisture in the indoor air to condense into water droplets.


Several everyday activities can increase the amount of moisture in your home, including:


  • Cooking and boiling water
  • Taking hot showers
  • Drying clothes indoors
  • Using a humidifier


If condensation is primarily forming on the inside of your windows, it does not usually mean your windows are defective. Improving ventilation, running bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and managing indoor humidity may help reduce the condensation.


Excessive or persistent interior condensation can contribute to moisture-related problems around window frames, so minimizing it is often a good idea.


Condensation Between the Glass Panes

Fogging between the panes is different from ordinary surface condensation. This is easy to check since you won't be able to wipe the condensation away from either side of the glass.


Modern insulated windows use sealed spaces between panes of glass to provide insulation and improve energy efficiency. Over time, the seal can deteriorate. Once the seal is compromised, moisture can enter the space between the panes and become trapped there.


You may notice a cloudy or hazy appearance, water droplets, or persistent fogging that remains even after you clean the window.


Because the moisture is trapped inside the insulated glass unit, changing your home's humidity will not solve the underlying problem. If the window is still under warranty, you may be able to have the failed glass unit repaired or replaced through the manufacturer. For older windows, persistent condensation between the panes is usually a sign that it is time to consider full window replacement.


Condensation on the Outside of the Window

When a window does a good job of preventing heat from transferring from inside the home to the outside, the exterior glass surface may remain relatively cool. If that surface becomes colder than the outdoor dew point, moisture from the surrounding air can condense on the glass.


This is similar to what happens when water droplets form on the outside of a cold glass on a humid day.


Outdoor temperature, humidity, shade, and the orientation of your windows can all influence exterior condensation. As a result, seeing moisture on the outside of your windows does not automatically mean the window is damaged or defective.


When Is Window Fogging a Sign You Need Replacement?

The location of the condensation is one of the most important clues when determining whether a window needs replacement.


Removable condensation on the surface of the glass is often related to humidity and temperature differences. If it forms on the inside, improving ventilation and controlling indoor moisture may help.


Persistent moisture between panes usually indicates a failed seal. Once that seal fails, the insulating gas between the panes can escape and outside air and moisture can enter the space between the glass.


That reduces the window’s insulating performance and often leads to recurring fogging that cannot be wiped away. For older windows, seal failure is usually a strong sign that window replacement is worth considering, especially if the window is also drafty, difficult to operate, or showing other signs of age.
